Manolis L

Notre Dame Bay, Newfoundland | Canada

A vessel seen across an expanse of deep blue water
“MANOLIS L”, a general cargo vessel, was sailing from Botwood, Newfoundland carrying a cargo of paper. She ran aground and sank in an area known as Blow Hard Rock, Notre Dame Bay, Newfoundland in a water depth of about 70 meters.

For many years, the wreck lay dormant on the seabed, but in April 2013, oil was found on sea birds and on the shore around the wreck.

Public Works and Government Services Canada submitted a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a full wreck and oil assessment to be performed on the MANOLIS L casualty located off the coast of Newfoundland. The requested statement of works included the following items –

Hull Assessment:

  • Identify areas of damage
  • Identify / confirm reference points of current leak locations
  • Identify hull frames / tanks / locations
  • Install patching where leaks are identified during the assessment
  • Hull thickness readings
  • Depth soundings on the hull and immediate seabed
  • 3D multibeam survey
  • Video survey

Oil Assessment:

  • Verify tank locations and existence of oil
  • Depth soundings on the hull and immediate seabed
  • 3D multibeam survey
  • Video survey

Resolve Marine was contracted by Canada Public Works to carry out and report on the above items. A combination of ROV and mixed gas diving operations were used to complete the scope. These were staged off the back deck of a local DP2 Anchor Handling Tug. Fugro was employed to conduct the multi-beam survey as well as provide valuable floating-asset positioning data throughout the project. For the testing of compartments, Resolve Marine used an in-house designed hot tap system to quickly drill and sample the tanks. This allowed the divers to be extremely productive given the relatively short bottom time.
