Fazayah Beach | Oman

The bulk cement carrier RAYSUT II departed the Port of Salalah, Oman partially loaded as the port was evacuated ahead of adverse weather. The vessel lost headway / steerage and subsequently grounded on Fazayah Beach, approx. 18 miles west of the port.

Al-Fazayah Beach Salalah in Oman is 5-kilometer-long pristine beach with four of the world’s seven turtle species nesting – the green turtle, the hawksbill, the loggerhead, and the Olive Ridley, all classified as endangered with the loggerhead turtle facing extinction.

At the time of the grounding, the vessel was laden with approximately 6,750mt of dry powdered Portland cement. After an initial failed attempt during the Khareef season to refloat the vessel, she was defueled and declared as a CTL. Resolve Marine was awarded the contract for removal and disposal of the vessel and cargo. Resolve immediately mobilized the Crane Barge RMG 1000 and Resolve Monarch from Singapore. The assets arrived in Salalah where the vessel was successfully patched up and refloated with cargo on board. Refloating was determined to be the most environmentally sound method to carry out the operation. Cutting in situ would have posed considerable delays with the operation possibly extending into the next Khareef season where weather conditions would have made operations more challenging.
