Stabilization of a Floating Casino

West Lake, Iowa | United States

Resolve Marine was called upon by HGI Lakeside Affinity Gaming, LLC. to undertake a challenging barge stabilization operation in Osceola, Iowa for the Lakeside Casino Hotel, and mobilized a crew.
While Iowa seems like an unexpected place to undertake a marine operation, the hotel’s casino rests on a floating barge in the back of the hotel’s property on West Lake, Iowa. Due to prolonged recent droughts, the lake’s water level decreased over time-reportedly the lake was losing about six inches per month. The barge had only 18" to 20" of clearance under the hull, leading Resolve Marine crew members to work around the perimeter of the barge.
The crew utilized an excavator from the landside and small work boats on the lakeside of the barge to successfully pull the bags underneath the vessel into their predetermined locations. The operation consisted of installing 24 roller bags underneath the vessel and inflating them to support the barge. The crew consisted of a salvage master, naval architect, and a team of divers and salvors. All worked through the winter months in Iowa and were able to install all the bags and successfully raise the barge roughly 16 inches, preventing it from grounding and ensuring the casino remained open.
After installing and inflating the roller bags, Resolve Marine kept a salvage technician on site from to monitor the pressures of the bags several times a day thus ensuring the system continued to work properly and the barge remained level.
