Fire/Ship to Ship Cargo Transfer

Following a collision and a fire that damaged part of the vessel and machinery, a loaded tanker had to be lightered prior to proceeding to drydock and further repairs. The vessel had a cargo of 67,000 cubic meters of Naphta, all of which had to be lightered to a receiving vessel. Since the machinery was also damaged, the method for the transfer of the cargo was to be a Ship to Ship (STS) operation over the top with hydraulically driven pumps and intrinsically safe power packs.

The accommodation of the vessel was in such a state that external accommodation was arranged. This was facilitated using tugs which were moored alongside the vessel, providing boarding and lodging to the team of 40 required for the operation. As soon as the receiving tanker was along the vessel, a discharge operation commenced. This was engineered by Resolve Marine naval architects and was approved by the authorities/stakeholders involved.

Ballasting was performed at the same time as the discharge. Once the cargo was discharged, stripping and washing of the tanks was performed by external pumps. Purging and ventilating was the last step of the operation to render the tanks gas free – with Resolve Marine successfully completing this work scope.
